MY PHILOSOPHY: Every region where grapes grow there are varieties that will make delicious wines. The challenge and greatest rewards are integrating soil, climate, appropriate varieties and tailored winemaking practices with targeted marketing.

I will be done when the East Coast U.S. has charted all possibilities.

Winemaker, Author, Wine Educator
Consultant to the Wine Industry

Eric Miller’s 40 year career in wine has covered the spectrum from winemaker and grape grower to winery owner and wine personality. He pioneered two important East Coast wine regions, and co-founded New York State’s first farm winery, Benmarl Vineyards, and later, Pennsylvania’s largest and best known winery, Chaddsford Winery. Along the way he and his wines have been acclaimed by every major national and international wine writer and publication, and he has been awarded numerous awards and distinctions, including the American Wine Society’s prestigious “Award of Merit” – given to just one American wine professional annually – in 2010. After having achieved those heights, Eric has now expanded his career into consulting, teaching, and writing about wine, culminating with the release of his new book, “The Vintner’s Apprentice” in 2011.

In this publication, with a forward by American wine guru Kevin Zraly, Miller
writes about the art and process of winemaking, from where to plant grapes
to what grapes to plant to what you can expect to achieve in the final product.
His interviews with winemakers from the United States, France, Italy, Australia,
South Africa, Chile, and Germany give readers great insight into winemaking
around the world. These wine masters relate their stories and share their
understanding about selecting sites and planting vineyards, about harvesting
and processing grapes, about cellar work and aging wines, about how to make
critical decisions and how to avoid problems.

Eric Miller spent a good portion of his youth growing up in Europe, including a small village in Burgundy where he first developed his passion for wine. When his family returned to the United States in 1970, they established Benmarl Vineyards in the Hudson Valley, New York States’ first farm winery. Here Eric experimented with and pioneered many of the wine varieties and types prevalent in the eastern U.S wine industry today. After building Benmarl into national prominence, he left New York, seeking a different grape growing climate, and thereafter established Pennsylvania’s largest and most recognized winery, Chaddsford Winery in 1982. Here, in the beautiful Brandywine Valley just 30 miles outside Philadelphia, Eric developed his prestigious Miller Estate Vineyard planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Barbera, and Pinot Grigio, and produced 25,000 cases of premium regional wines annually. Today he is among a handful of East Coast U.S. winemakers who have achieved national acclaim and recognition.

Each year Eric’s wines at Chaddsford Winery have won numerous awards, medals and distinctions in international wine competitions. In 2010 his 2007 Merican, Chaddsford Winery’s flagship Bordeaux/Cabernet blend, was selected as top winner in the Pennsylvania Wine Society’s Wine Excellence Awards. In 2011 the same wine was selected to be served at the Inaugural Ball for new Pennsylvania governor-elect Thomas Corbett.

In the course of his career at Chaddsford Winery, Eric has also been deeply involved in his region’s efforts to elevate the public perception of Pennsylvania as a prominent grape-growing and winemaking state. He has served as a Board Member of the PA Department of Agriculture’s Wine Marketing and Research Board and as President of the Southeast Grape Industry Association (forerunner of today’s PA Association of Winegrape Growers), and was selected as a member of the Advisory Board for both the Pennsylvania state enologist and viticulturist. On a national level, Eric has served on the Board of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Viticultural Consortium.

Beside his winemaking and viticultural work, Eric Miller has always been involved with the wider world of food and wine, including affiliations on the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Wine and Food (Delaware Valley Chapter) and Philadelphia Restaurant School. He has also been a member of the Confrérie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs, the International Wine & Food Society, the American Society of Enology and Viticulture, the American Wine Society and the Society of Wine Educators.

In the past few years Eric hosted Winemaker’s Dinners and special events at various restaurants and brew pubs, taught classes and presented wine & food seminars for Temple University’s Fox School of Business, the Wharton Business School, the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA, the Kitchen Shoppe Cooking School in Chambersburg, PA, and many other wine, food and agriculture groups. He has also travelled the country familiarizing wine lovers with “The Vintner’s Apprentice,” doing winemaker’s dinners and presenting interesting topics at various wine conferences, including the Society of Wine Educator’s national conference in Providence, RI, and the American Wine Society’s national conference in Rochester NY.
