• Conference Presentations – I have a long history of doing winemaking presentations and tastings for educational groups like the American Wine Society and the Society of Wine Educators. My sell-out sessions have ranged from “Fifty Ways to Lose your Wine Cellar” and “Dirty Winemaking Secrets” to a tasting of six same vintage Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noirs made by different California producers.

• Featured Speaker – I have appeared as a guest speaker for many business and educational groups including Temple University’s Fox School of Business, the Wharton Business School, the Pennsylvania College of Technology, the Kitchen Shoppe Cooking School in Chambersburg, PA, and the Philadelphia Restaurant School. I adapt my presentations to the groups needs and develop appropriate topics like “The Ten Minute Wine Expert” or “The Seven Reasons Wines Taste Like They Do.”

• Wine Tastings & Dinners – Over the years I have put together hundreds of wine tastings and wine and food pairing dinners for individuals and groups ranging from the International Wine and Food Society and the Pennsylvania Wine Society to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

• Wine Education Classes – I enjoy developing and teaching wine classes ranging from “beginner’s” topics like “Wine 101” and “Wine Types and Styles” to more advanced sessions like “Super Tuscans” and “Rhone Rangers.” My wine and food pairing classes have run the gamut from “Steak, Stinky Cheese and Old Red Wines” to “Wine and Chocolate” tastings.

• Viticulture – Site analysis, variety selection, cultural practice, harvest parameters

I have been intimately involved with the development of East Coast vineyards at my family’s Benmarl Vineyards in the Hudson Valley and my own Miller Estate Vineyard at Chaddsford Winery in southeastern Pennsylvania. In addition I have travelled the world to research various grape varieties and study different viticultural regions.

During my years at Chaddsford Winery I served as President of the Southeast Grape Growers Association and, was a Board member for the PA Department of Agriculture’s Wine Marketing and Research Board, and served on the USDA’s Viticultural Consortium to fund viticulture and enology research programs in the U.S.

• Enology – Development of winemaking operations and practices, oversee trial work

In my career as an active winemaker I have overseen the development of three different wineries, including winery layout, equipment purchase and product line decisions and implementation. I have had the distinction of having the first farm winery license in New York State and developing the largest winery in Pennsylvania, and along the way have advised many new start-up operations as a friend and colleague.

• Marketing – Product line, market identification and outreach

I have been very successful in selling wines both to the public through winery retail stores and outlets, and into wholesale distribution. I am familiar, have worked with, and have maintained relationships with most East Coast importers and distributors.
